How To Check If You’ve Got Unclaimed Money Sitting In A Bank Somewhere

No, this isn’t a PPI money scam. Nor is it an email from cousin Nigel, curiously messaging from somewhere in eastern Europe, asking if he can transfer a couple of thousand pounds into your account if you send him all the details he needs for it. Plus your car keys. And maybe your PayPal password, too.

According to a recent government report, you could well have cash sitting in a forgotten bank account somewhere waiting to be claimed. Apparently, there are millions floating about untouched, including from deceased family members that have not been accounted for.

Money Saving Expert estimates that the figure of unclaimed money in the UK is around £850million. There is also thought to be up to £15billion in untouched Premium Bonds, pensions and insurance policies. One chap recently found £39,000 sitting about in an old pension fund. We’re nowhere near old enough to have accumulated that kind of cash, but you never know.

So, how do you find out if you have any extra money lurking about? The quickest and easiest way is to visit My Lost Account and fill in an online form.

The site is a joint project between the British Bankers’ Association, the Building Societies Association and the National Savings & Investments, so its perfectly legitimate.

You’ll hear back from them after they’ve checked for you in about three months. And we reckon its well worth a shot, too.

Good luck.
