This year’s British weather has been glorious. But with the arrival of rain, you may be thinking of looking further afield to catch some serious rays.
So whether you’re planning what to do with your summer off from uni or just need an escape before autumn, we’ve rounded up some of the prettiest and cheapest holiday destinations to get your travel fix. Oh, and they’ll look great on your ‘gram too.
Forget the pricey Algarve, Portuguese city Porto is the new place to go for sights, sea, sun and fun. You won’t be able to resist snapping the colourful seafront buildings or kitsch trams, which draw around 4 million people to the region every year. Hop on a return flight from around the £100 mark and grab a bed at a low-key guesthouse for around £50 per night.
If it’s blissful beaches you’re after, be sure to pay Tarifa a visit. Less than an hour from Gibraltar airport, you’ll find blue waters, golden sands and very hot surfers, as well as a stunning view of Morocco just across the way. British Airways will take you there for around £100 return and you can even snap up a luxury hotel for £50-70 per night.
If stunning historic sights are your thing, put Rome on your list. Flights from the likes London, Bristol and Glasgow can be as cheap as £100 return, and there are plenty of low-cost hostels and hotels to choose from around the ancient city. And, of course, there’s the pizza.
You may think of Mallorca as a cheap and cheerful package holiday destination, but its capital Palma is full of stunning architecture that doesn’t even require a filter to look beautiful. Return flights from London come in around £75 and accommodation doesn’t break the bank either. It makes this Spanish city the perfect choice for a bit of low cost wanderlust.
Just off the coast of tourist hotspot Dubrovnik, you’ll find this quieter and cheaper town that’s no less impressive. The island is green, rocky and packed with fab beaches, offering a bit of a break from the main tourist traps. Plus, you can now fly into nearby Dubrovnik with a variety of budget airlines, including easyJet and Jet2, and book a modern hotel for a purse-friendly price.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Slovenia may not be on your travel wishlist, but you should definitely make room for it in 2018. Lake Bled is a stunning beauty spot in Northern Slovenia, which mixes great weather with rustic charm. Plus, the likes of easyJet and Wizz Air now fly into Ljubljana, which is a mere 30 mins away by car.
