The old Taylor Swift is dead.
But then, we knew that already, didn’t we? That macabre RIP mural declared her so shortly after Kim Kardashian “exposed” her as a liar during the “Famous” feud with Kanye West and branded her a snake to millions of fans. (Not up to date on the goss? Have a read of this.)
Taylor might not have released any new solo material since 2014’s 1989, but boy, has she been watching, listening and waiting.
Now, new single “Look What You Made Me Do”, the first from upcoming sixth album reputation, has given her the chance to hit back and she has done so with thunderous force.
The new Taylor Swift is ragey and more than a little bit scary, and we are living for the drama.
“Look What You Made Me Do” has ties with the first 1989 single, “Shake It Off” in that both songs are aimed at Tay’s haters, but that’s where the similarities end. This track is much more pointed in its revenge (“Honey I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time, I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red underlined”) and the deadpan chorus is given extra sass by the fact that nobody was expecting it.
Using the flat melody from Right Said Fred’s 1991 classic “I’m Too Sexy” (with co-writing credit to them) is genius, not least for the juxtaposition between that light-hearted party hit and this much darker, heavier song.
So far all we have is the above lyric video (rumour has it the full one will premiere during the MTV VMAs on Sunday, which Katy Perry is hosting, but that’s another story), but that gives us plenty of meat to chew over.
There are the snakes, surely confirming a jab at Kim as predicted before the track even dropped, but our highlight is the climax, when Tay picks up the phone and tells the person on the other end that “the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now…’cause she’s dead”. Dead being scrawled in dripping red blood, naturally.
Tay has fully committed herself to reclaiming the snake narrative (be afraid, Kimye, be afraid 🐍). So much so, that she is now selling snake jewellery on her official site so that Swifties can join her snake squad.
The rings, designed to wrap around the finger for a statement look, come in 24kt gold-plated silver or platinum-plated silver and feature 300 zircon crystals. They cost $60 (sob) and you can get them shipped over to the UK for an additional $17.
Sadly, pre-orders are already sold out, but more should be made available soon, so get bookmarking this page. Or you could opt for a black hoody with a snake design instead, for $75.
TS6, we are so ready for you.
