Oscars 2017: The Winners Were Not Who You Were Expecting

Oscars 2017

Thought you had this year’s Oscars predictions nailed? Well, there’s every chance you’re reading the winner’s list this morning in something of a state of shock.

The biggest upset of the night was one of awards show nightmares. Faye Dunaway named La La Land as the year’s Best Picture during the finale of the Sunday night ABC broadcast only to be corrected on stage a few minutes later – after the cast had already started celebrating.

Huge gasps were heard in the Dolby theatre when La La Land’s Jordan Horowitz declared that Moonlight, a coming-of-age drama, was really the winner. Cue a commotion on stage as the La La Land cast sheepishly left for the real champions to claim their award.

So how did it happen? Well, a close up of the red envelope appears to show a card containing the previous award’s winner, which was Emma Stone for Best Actress in her role in La La Land. Actor and filmaker Warren Beatty had hesitated just before handing the card over to Dunaway.

Other surprises included Casey Affleck winning Best Actor for his role in Manchester By The Sea, and Mahershala Ali winning Best Actor In A Supporting Role for his part in Moonlight.

Viola Davis added to her bulging awards collection with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her part in Fences.

Best Director did of course go to La La Land’s Damien Chazelle.
