Gone is the foam finger, the crotch gyration and all the weed. The short hair is a thing of the past, as are the fluffy nipple covers and the dancing midgets. Miley Cyrus has now undergone reinvention number three in her surprisingly sedate new video for ‘Malibu’.
The singer appears completely transformed from psych-punk hippy to boho sea nymph, as she is seen writhing around in fields wearing a polo-neck jumper and pants and prancing along the beachfront in a virginal white dress with a bunch of balloons. Why? Because she’s in love all over again.
The hazy, sun-soaked track is an ode to Miley’s happy life with fiancé Liam Hemsworth in Malibu, and indicates a change in direction from the star whose last album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, was an avant-garde pop offering oddly merged with psychedelic rock influences.
Hemsworth and Cyrus got back together in 2016 after a break in 2013 following rumours of an infidelity. The are currently engaged, although no details have been revealed about a wedding.
So, why the big change? Well, for one thing, Miley’s tired of being stared at all the time.
On being able to go grocery shopping in Malibu almost completely unbothered, she told Billboard: “I love talking to people, and I approach them in a normal, ‘Don’t treat me different, ’cause I’m not’ way. That’s what started this evolution for me, getting out of my Dead Petz phase.
“People stare at me anyway, but people stare at me a lot when I’m dressed as a f**king cat.”
She does have a point.
