Love Island Is Returning, But Not As You Know It

It's not what fans were hoping for, but it might prove even better (ITV)

Love Island fans still struggling with the barren no-man’s land that is 9pm each night, it’s time to pop the champers.

ITV2 has confirmed that a replacement from the makers of your favourite reality dating series will be hitting our living rooms later this year.

It might not be called Love Iceland (great suggestion though, Zoella) and the format might not be exactly the same, but Survival of the Fittest has ‘next TV addiction’ written all over it.

The show will follow a group of young singles in the South African savannah as they take part in physical and mental challenges that pit the boys and the girls against each other. It’s “the ultimate battle of the sexes”, basically.

To mix it up a little and hopefully give us the lovefest we crave, the contestants will be offered dates with one another to test their team loyalties and see if they put their mates or newfound crushes first. The winners, decided by the public through numerous evictions, will bag a cash prize.

“ITV2’s younger audience will no doubt relish the escapism this immersive physical game show from sunny South Africa will provide next winter,” said ITV2’s head of acquisitions. “Like Love Island before it, this series’ nightly mixture of fun challenges and burgeoning relationships ought to be a must see.”

Meanwhile, Chris Hughes and Kem Cetinay’s spin-off show has been given a title, Kem and Chris – Straight Outta Love Island, and will follow their “musical journey” since leaving the villa. Girlfriends Amber Davies and Olivia Attwood will be making appearances, as, hopefully, will the pair’s BFF Stormzy, when the two-parter airs soon.

Oh and Love Island will not be moving to ITV next year despite its rocketing ratings. Network boss Kevin Lygo has, understandably, voiced his concern that “old people would die” if they caught a glimpse of the raunchy antics while innocently flicking onto channel three.

If you fancy jetting out to Mallorca or wherever the 2018 show will be set for seven weeks of fun in the sun, applications are now open. You know what to do…(hint: get applying).
