Lorde: Sorry For Saying Being Friends With Taylor Swift Is Like Having A Disease
Ah, the insensitive celebrity interview gaffe, usually made in an off-the-cuff attempt to be witty and interesting, but ultimately ends in a few raised eyebrows.
It’s a scenario stars know all too well, especially when they’ve got an album/movie/TV show/make-up line/book to promote. And Lorde, on the press trail ahead of the launch of her new album Melodrama, has created one all of her own.
Speaking to the Guardian, Lorde is asked how difficult she finds it maintaining her A-list squad behind the camera lens. Writer Tom Lamont particularly mentions Taylor Swift, before slipping into a little descriptive narrative of his own like so:
“In conversation, she plunges into new ideas with the enthusiasm of an undergraduate enrolled on her dream course. She searches for the better-expressed phrase or analogy — which isn’t always necessary, because she’s very good off the cuff.”
And so she responds:
“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
The internet, of course, cares not for a misplacde analogy, and many on social media expressed their disappointment in Lorde’s odd comparison.
As someone with #CPPS Lorde comparing her friendship with T-Swift as “an autoimmune disease” has really pissed me off.

@lorde as someone with an autoimmune disease I don’t appreciate trivializing my daily struggle to avoiding paparazzi with your famous friend

One particular follower, Stephanie Anderson, mentioned the fact that Lorde actually, literally has a friend with an auto-immune disease: Selena Gomez has Lupus.

Sensing she’d touched a few raw nerves, Lorde later apologized.
