Kelly Clarkson fans will remember her blubbing at the 2006 Grammys, but the singer has revealed that she wasn’t only crying tears of joy over winning her first gong.
Due to an unfortunate mix-up of test results, the American Idol winner had in fact been misdiagnosed with cancer just hours before the awards show and was, understandably, “completely freaking out”.
“When I won I thought ‘Oh my god, this is like God giving me one cool thing before something horrible happens,” she told Billboard’s Pop Shop Podcast.
“I went to the doctor’s the next day and they apologised for mixing up results, and I was like, ‘Are you for real?! You completely ruined my whole experience!’ It was kind of the worst/greatest day. A lot of the moments got stolen from that mishap but hey, I didn’t have cancer! I don’t even remember anything but being terrified.”
Clarkson admitted that her team had to “redo her makeup four times” because she was crying so much before the ceremony began.
Her sobbing continued on stage when picking up her Best Pop Vocal Performance award, but little did we know that when she said “you have no idea what this means to me”, it wasn’t just the usual cliche.
Luckily, Clarkson had another chance to enjoy the Grammys sans cancer dread when she won for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2013, making her the first singer to win the same award twice.
She is nominated for the 13th time this year for her live performance of “Piece by Piece” – a success she describes as “pretty special”. Hopefully, there’ll be no doctors involved, just makeup artists, hair stylists and people serving her fizz!
Hopefully this time there’ll be no doctors involved, just makeup artists, hair stylists and people serving her champers!
