There are few celebrity tragedies we can remember as vividly as that of Heath Ledger’s. The actor was just 28 when he was found dead following an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, leaving behind daughter Matilda Rose with her mother, Michelle Williams.
Almost a decade later, on what would have been Heath’s 38th birthday, production company Spike has launched a preview for an upcoming documentary about his life called ‘I Am Heath Ledger’. And it’s just as emotional as you can imagine.
Featuring interviews with close friends, family and filmmakers – including director Ang Lee and Naomi Watts – and spliced with home videos, it paints an intimate portrait of who the actor was behind the lens.
The film also marks some of the ground-breaking roles Heath played during his career.
“Before Brokeback Mountain came out, it would have been unthinkable to have a romantic tragedy involving two gay cowboys,” actor Ben Mendelsohn said.
“This is one of the biggest heartthrobs on earth taking on that character—that’s an artist.”
The documentary is set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on 26 April.
