Every year the London, Milan, Paris and New York Fashion Weeks mean one thing for us: hair envy.
The latest spring summer shows were no exception, with everything from poker straight locks and high ponytails to fluffy afros and ballerina topknots showcased to perfection on the runways.
The good news is that there’s a ton of on-trend styles to try, so you’re bound to find something that suits you. Practice makes perfect wasn’t your teacher’s favourite motto for nothing though and it definitely applies here.
Show some patience and determination while attempting these tutorials and before long you’ll be replicating the hottest looks by yourself in minutes, no professional stylist required.
Blame Gigi Hadid for this one. Curls are also everywhere but if you do want to echo Versace’s latest catwalk style, it’s time to dig out the straighteners. Be sure to use plenty of conditioning products to keep your hair from drying out. Frazzled is never cool.
Neeeeeigh! High ponies are back with a bang. For an extra elegant twist on this school classic, try wrapping a heavy chunk of hair around the tie to hide it. If this bit ends up looking silly, simply let it out again, but when done right it’s a showstopper. Lower ponies for longer faces and keep them high to lengthen round ones.
For the quick and easy laid-back boho style rocked by Missoni’s models in Milan, simply braid some cute accent plaits into loose hair. Pair with statement earrings for a bold impact ideal for the upcoming festival season.
Flat iron waves
This is a real winner if you have straighteners but can’t afford to splash out on more hairstyling tools. Simply bend the hair away from the face with the irons, give it a quick twirl, then clamp to set the style.
Get your hair out of your face on a hot day by twisting it up into a tight topknot. This lifts your face, extenuating your cheekbones, and looks smouldering when paired with dramatic eye makeup. Now if only we could dance like Natalie Portman in Black Swan…
If the ballerina style is too rigid for you, try the softer ‘hun’ to add height to long loose hair. This is a great one for your ‘I didn’t even look in the mirror to do this, honest’ arsenal.
Free that fro
Forget painstakingly curled ringlets and let your fluffy fro go wild. Michelle Obama sent everyone into raptures after being spotted with natural hair last year, so it’s time to set those afros free to shine.
No, really. Perms might be ‘so 80s’, but this ‘lite’ style is just gorgeous if you’re eager to nail a hippy style this summer. Use a slim curling wand to create baby spirals and loosen them up with mist spray. Copy Topshop’s models by adding a pineapple pony.
Maybe not one for the office, but when you’re feeling like a drowned rat after a dip in the pool, it’s nice to know that slick wet-look hair has been championed by Givenchy and Kendall Jenner this season. Julien Macdonald’s models showcased scrunched-up beachy waves, too.
Come day three at your fav festival, you’ll be desperate to detract from your unstyled dirty hair. That’s where DIY accessories come in, and nothing is too crazy. Look to Dolce & Gabbana for inspiration – those flamboyant floral tiaras on the Milan runway were quite something. You could also try incorporating lace, ribbons and fabric scraps.
Best of both
Can’t decide between straight and wavy? Make like Christian Siriano’s models in New York and go for half and half. Be daring with the divide.
Hairspray? Check. Backcomber? Check. Just go for it.
Not just for schoolgirls, messy pigtails look adorable when worn with floaty dresses or oversized shirts. Try a low-slung plait or twisted knot at the back if you want to keep your hair behind your head.
Can’t be bothered with all this?
You’re in luck! Embracing your hair’s natural texture is the key to effortless beauty. Just add a little salt spray to give those waves some oomph and pair with a red lip for a dash of colour. Gorgeous.
