It’s hard to imagine telly, and indeed humanity in general, getting much more ridiculous, but then you read the synopsis for a show like Bromans and realise that, somehow, there is scope for life to get even more surreal.

Dubbed “the new Love Island” (yes, another one), ITV2’s latest gift to the reality TV obsessed among us is all about watching “modern geezers in the time of Caesar” battle it out to be crowned the best gladiator and win a cash prize.

The contestants’ better halves are coming along for moral support (no LGBTQ representation, again, groan) and to take part in some challenges of their own.

The couples will be living in a communal space where they will dress like Romans, eat like Romans and basically pretend to be Romans. Think Freshers toga party, taken too far.

David McIntosh is trainer Doctore, comedian Tom Bell is his assistant and “real life Roman” Roman Kemp is hosting.

The crazy fun begins on 14 September and no, we don’t know whether to laugh or cry either.
