He’s quit drinking, loves going to therapy and has taken up sculpting. It’s fair to assume Brad Pitt, who has spoken about the aftermath of his divorce from Angelina Jolie for the first time, is something of a changed man.
The couple are currently undergoing visitation arrangements for their six children, and while they do so, Pitt tells GQ magazine, he’s working to be a better father and a better man.
“I was really on my back and chained to a system when Child Services was called,” he says. “And you know, after all that, we’ve been able to work together to sort this out. We’re both doing our best.”
Pitt faced an investigation from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services after reports he had become aggressive during a heated row aboard a plane in November last year. However they closed the the case after finding no further evidence of abuse.
He told the magazine he consciously decided not to drag the custodial agreements through the courts for the sake of his children. Thankfully, his ex-wife agrees with him.
“It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart,” he said.
“I grew up with a Father-knows-best, war mentality – the father is all-powerful, super strong – instead of really knowing the man and his own self-doubt and struggles. And it’s hit me smack in the face with our divorce: I gotta be more for them. I have to show them. And I haven’t been great at it.”
“For me, this period has really been about looking at my weaknesses and failures and owning my side of the street,” he added, admitting he “loves” attending therapy.
It’s a step in a more positive direction for the actor, who confessed he stayed on the floor of a friend’s house following the immediate aftermath of the divorce because he was “too sad” to go to his own house.
The actor and producer went on to admit that he had given up on drinking six months ago after he was “boozing too much”.
“I enjoy wine very, very much but I just ran it to the ground,” he said. “I had to step away for a minute. And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good.”
Pitt has also, he says, developed a particular fondness for Frank Ocean.
“I find this young man so special,” he says. “Talk about getting to the raw truth. He’s painfully honest. He’s very, very special. I can’t find a bad one.”
