Trust Beyoncé to make the fashion elite look behind the times a day before the biggest event on the style calendar, the Met Ball, even took place.
The singer took to her mother’s benefit event wearing a spectacular nymph-like headdress that would not doubt make the late Carmen Miranda deeply envious. In true super-human style, she also slipped herself (and her pregnant bump) into a stunning red silk STELLO gown:
Her mother, Tina Knowles, organised the Wearable Art Gala in order to raise money for WACO Theater centre, which encourages young people to pursue careers and scholarships in the arts. She went dressed in a gown made entirely out of leaves:
Kelly Rowland was there too, wearing what looked like dozens of tiny ballet dancers piled on top of each other. And Solange looked radiant in a red mini-dress:
I am super proud of my beautiful mother for creating such an awesome event. Close to $1 million was raised for The WACO Theater Center to benefit young people through their mentorship programs and the arts. Mom, you inspire us all to be generous, selfless, positive, to have empathy, to love and to praise creativity in the world. It brought tears to my eyes to be a witness to what you and Richard have created together. WACO is a safe place truly Where Art Can Occur. I love you.
The benefit event comes days after Beyoncé announced the Formation scholarship programme offering four young women funding to study the creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.
In a statement on her website, Beyoncé said she wanted scholarships to “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident”.
